“Decorating China”

David Hsueh of Bella Vista Studio-Shanghai, China and Buildtec International-Taipei, Taiwan has come a long way from obtaining his accounting degree from National Chung Hsing University and a Master’s degree in International Management from the University of St. Thomas, but not that far. He currently is the leader in high-end decorative finishing businesses in the Far East as an exclusive distributor of Faux Effects® products in the region. His strong business and management background with the addition of decorative art has created his enormous success.

Though the worldwide economic crisis has affected China, with it now at its slowest pace in three years, it still is one of the largest economies in the World, second only to the United States. With this, a good majority of China’s urban population has experienced and continues to have a rise in their standard of living, thus allowing this section of the population more money to be spent on goods and services that were once unavailable to them. This situation has offered more options for high-end foreign materials as the Chinese have more access to Western products. Decoration for the home featuring European and American goods are in strong demand.

Buildtec International Taiwan was established by David as an importer of European decorative finishing materials, including their application, in 1987. For over 25 years, Buildtec has finished more than 27 million square feet of façade using monocouche renders, a French product by Saint Gobain Weber made specifically for this purpose. During this time period, David also became the general manager for the Greater China Area promoting Saint Gobain Weber and initializing service work.

It was in 2006 that David expanded his skills and led a team to complete major decorative finishing projects at the Venetian Casino and Ponte 16 Sofitel Resorts in Macau. The large scale of these projects took a year to complete, and by the following year, David was searching to expand his business and decorative finishing offerings further. He crafted finishing techniques by taking classes at The Studio at Faux Effects International, Inc.™ in the United States and joined decorative art organizations, such as IDAL-International Decorative Artisans League. David saw the growth potential of decorative finishing in China and established Bella Vista Studios in Shanghai. It also was in 2007 that David began his formal relationship with Faux Effects International, Inc.™ becoming the only authorized product distributor and workshop training studio in China and Taiwan of Faux Effects® products. He realized that Faux Effects® was very upscale and designer high-end, which David strongly desired for China. “I set up Bella Vista Studio in China to promote my ideas and services, focusing on the high-end residential business,” states David. “Our philosophy is ‘Create the art (for the) life you live now.’”

His philosophy has paid off ten-fold—he now has 12 Bella Vista Studio (BVS) distributors in China, one in Taiwan and a total of 25 shops and locations in the region. In addition to these designer BVS showrooms, David and his distributors exhibit throughout the region in various decorative, design and coatings tradeshows. Visibility at all venues of Bella Vista continues to bring customers’ decorative home desires to a reality.

Bella Vista Studio-Shanghai provides training programs in the Faux Effects® product line for approved BVS distributors. David custom creates exclusive, one of a kind, non-replicable finishes using Faux Effects® that he then trains only to his BVS distributors in a standardized form. These finishes conform to David’s highest standard of quality, ease of repair and beauty. His keen design style using the best decorative finishing products, Faux Effects®, is why China’s emerging echelon and high-end establishments search exclusively for Bella Vista. David credits his success to treating his business similar to a fashion business and using a restaurant model for expanding his presence. “We provide all types of faux and decorative finishing, high-end design and quality—every time!” David continually expands his knowledge of decoration and design by attending industry events and workshops, and he invites some of the most world renowned instructors to China to educate his staff and BVS distributors. By bringing the newest design trends to China, David continues to expand his business and clientele. In 2013, Bella Vista plans to expand to more locations in China and to offer mural work and trompe l’oeil. “It is in our future,” says David. And … the future is bright for Bella Vista Studios!
